I’ve been a fan of The Heartland International Film Festival for many years. I consider it to be a small slice of Hollywood in my own backyard when it screens over 200 independent films every October. Not only is it a great alternative to access films that won’t typically run at the local multiplex but it gives Indiana filmmakers and high schoolers an opportunity to be featured at a top notch film festival.
Premiering this weekend is a new festival created by the same organizers called Indy Shorts, which will be held at Newfields (formerly Indianapolis Museum of Art). This four day festival features only short films by filmmakers across the globe and is a qualifier festival for the Academy Awards in the Best Narrative Short Film and Best Documentary Short Film categories.
I am honored to be a part of this film festival event not only as an audience member, but as the host of a panel discussion about story crafting on Saturday, July 28 at 2pm. I’m going to be joined by Jeremy Wallace, and Peter Matsoukas in discussing the skills used in crafting well conceived stories for film. If you have interest in telling great stories for film or otherwise, you should join us.
You can find out more about the Indy Shorts International Film Festival at IndyShorts.org. And if you’re on Twitter use the hashtag #IndyShorts to track what’s going on.
Make the time this week to take a drive down to Newfields and check out this inaugural event and support some of the world’s most creative talents. It will not only benefit them, but you and the growing Indianapolis arts community.
